Sanyo 3-1/2-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cookers/Warmers with Bread-Baking Functions Review

Sanyo 3-1/2-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cookers/Warmers with Bread-Baking Functions
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I saw it had a bread baking function, I was curious. I didn't expect a whole lot but I figured if the bread baking isn't great, I'd always have an oven anyway. So I took the chance.
I just used frozen bread dough (the one with 3 loaves in a bag). 1 loaf was a bit too big so I pinched off the end to make it smaller.
after 90 minutes I opened the lid it was all the way to the top. I then flip it over to brown the other side. Now the instruction says after 40 minutes you have to punch it down. Well, I didn't because I didn't hear the buzzer. But since it baked fine, I don't even bother to punch it down. It bakes fine without doing so. I used Pizza dough. What's great is that for a quick loaf, it won't heat up the whole kitchen. It doesn't use unnecessary eletricity(or gas) because you don't have to turn on the big oven. When we decide to have Italian, I just pop one piece of thawed dough. By the time the dinner is ready, bread is done. It doesn't produce dark crust, instead, it comes out with very light crust. Inside is so soft like steamed bun. It is so yummy. I also tried sweet roll dough with cinnamon, currant and sugar. It was great, too. I'm sure you can get really creative.
And by the way, it also cooks great rice, too. I used to own Zojirushi and I believe Sanyo cooks better rice than that. Not that Zojirushi is bad, it was an older model. This rice cooker's inner bowl is much thicker so that might be why....
Anyway, I am so glad I bought this.

Black & Decker 3 Cups Uncooked Yields 6 Cups Cooked, Rice Cooker Review

Black and Decker 3 Cups Uncooked Yields 6 Cups Cooked, Rice Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am very impressed with this rice cooker. Many of the reviews for other brands were not very encouraging. I thought that Black and Decker has never let me down, so I gave it a shot. I measure exactly as directed on the instructions and the rice comes out perfect. I even substitute broth for the water and add my own blends of spices based on my cravings that particular evening. The cleanup is fantastic. I am going to buy one for my daughter and grandson this Christmas. We have used this cooker about 12 times now and the results are consistent. Please note the smaller size of this unit if you cook very large amounts of rice at one time.
** I have now owned this cooker for 7 months and am still amazed at how well it works. It remains so easy to clean up even after using it about 2-3 times per week. It has always produced perfect rice. And, that is even when I add lots of different items for a variety of rice dishes.

Zojirushi NS-TGC10 Micom 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer, Stainless Steel Review

Zojirushi NS-TGC10 Micom 5-1/2-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer, Stainless Steel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just got this rice cooker this afternoon & immediately tried it out making one "Zojirushi cup" of sticky short grain white rice I bought at a Japanese grocery store. I just finished gobbling it up with a little soy sauce and it was DELICIOUS! The rice came out perfectly - nice and sticky (I can't wait to make some sushi with it!), but not watery at all and cooked perfectly.
I was really torn between this model and Zojirushi's NS-LAC05 3-Cup model. Most of the time, I will be cooking rice for only 2 people, so the 3-Cup NS-LAC05 seemed ideal. But, on the other hand, I liked the flexibility of getting this bigger 5 1/2-Cup model - e.g., when having company over for dinner, or for cooking "one pot" rice-based dishes - I thought I could use the extra room in both cases. And, this bigger model can make cakes, where as the 3-Cup is too small. The only thing that worried me about getting this bigger model was I wondered if it would cook a small amount (i.e., one "Zojirushi cup") of plain rice as well as the smaller model - after all, that is what I would be doing most of the time.
Well, the flexibility won out in the end (as well as the surprisingly lower price of the NS-TGC10 on Amazon - $10 cheaper than the smaller NS-LAC05). And my worries about making a small amount of plain rice in the NS-TGC10 turned out to be unfounded as I discovered in my test run.
So, if you are torn between these two Zojirushi models, I recommend this one - $10 cheaper & more flexibilty. Plus, judging from the dimensions of both, it is not much bigger than the NS-LAC05 so it won't take up significantly more kitchen counter space.

Panasonic SRG06FG 3.3-Cup Automatic Rice Cooker Review

Panasonic SRG06FG 3.3-Cup Automatic Rice Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fast easy no fuss way to make rice in a snap. The directions are a little Engrish-y. But in a nutshell:
Scoop out your desired rice amount say 2 cups(using the enclosed scoop).
Rinse the rice a few times in a strainer to get some of the starch out--help it from making a bubbly mess and I find it makes better sticky rice.
1.Dump rice in cooker.
2.Add water to the proper line. Two cups of rice means you add water up to the fill line 2. And yes you put in the water after the rice is already in there.
3.Turn on, wait 15 minutes for the cooker to shut off and let the rice sit unmolested for 15 minutes before eating. = perfect rice.
The directions also recommend soaking the rice for 30 minutes before turning the cooker on, I never do and the rice turns out perfect...let the steam do the work and don't stir or take the lid off while cooking.
Super easy clean up since the unit is non-stick. Can't ask for more at the price. I love mine.
Update: It's June 2008 and mine is still working great. I now don't even bother to rinse the rice first and I've never had my cooker bubble over. For making brown rice, I add a little more water than normal, say 1/4 cup.
Update: 2010, still works great and after running it (the cooker base insert) through the dishwasher all these years it has not yet chipped or scratched or flaked. Also found out the cooker works great with Vigo brands pre-packed Red Beans and Rice or Black Beans and Rice 8oz bags. (1 packet = fill line #2 of water)

Zojirushi NS-VGC05 Micom 3-Cup Electric Rice Cooker and Warmer Review

Zojirushi NS-VGC05 Micom 3-Cup Electric Rice Cooker and Warmer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did a lot of research prior to choosing the Zojirushi rice cooker and luckily for me by the time I was ready to purchase the company had come out with this model NS-VGC05 which is very compact and perfect for one person or even two. It does an amazing job of cooking the rice to perfection. The instructions were easy to follow especially for being a novice. I am anxious to try the different settings for different rices and cakes. I called the company to find out about the built in clock. The instructions did not explain whether you have to have the unit plugged in to recharge the clock. The answer is that you do not have to have it plugged in. It is a lithium battery that has a 5-6 year life and then you would call the company directly to have it replaced.
The clean up was really easy again by following the instructions. I highly recommend this product. It is definitely worth the money paid!!!

Cuisinart CSC-650 Slow Cooker Review

Cuisinart CSC-650 Slow Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I did quite a bit of research before purchasing this slow cooker.
America's Test Kitchen recommends West Bend Versatility slow cooker. It is a truly versatile model, but I didn't like its aluminum insert. As you may know, aluminum can be hazardous to health, so this slow cooker was scratched off my list pretty quickly.
The other models I looked at were All-Clad Stainless Steel Slow Cooker (available from William Sonoma only), Farberware Millennium (also recommended by America's Test Kitchen), Cuisinart CSC-650 and various Rival models ("various Rival models" has an interesting ring to it :) ).
All of the latest slow cookers are made in China, so I was somewhat concerned about the construction quality. One of the main reasons I picked Cuisinart model was a 3-year warranty, compared to just 1 year for the rest of the competition.
Another factor was the generally positive feedback from CSC-650 owners. Cooking.com is probably a better place to check for reviews, because they let you post a review only if you actually purchased that particular item from them.
I had this baby delivered to me about a week ago, and I put it to work right away. I must say I am satisfied with my purchase decision. Having said that, here's a list of things that I do and don't like about this machine...
Do Like:
--------
- 3-year warranty (1 year for every other slow cooker I researched)
- retractable cord (I wish every appliance had it!)
- cooks well (overall), and no, it doesn't burn food as some reviewers have indicated
- construction quality seems to be good, although it is impossible to say for sure until appliance is a couple of years old
Don't Like:
-----------
- stainless steel housing gets stained quite easily, should have been more fingerprint-resistant
- "Made in China": $99 is a premium price to pay for an item that was manufactured using cheap labor; manufacturers who reap huge profits from the North American market should invest into the local labor market
- cooks most things faster than recipies (even the ones included in Cuisinart booklet) indicate, so you have to keep an eye on your food to make sure it doesn't overcook
After purchasing the slow cooker, I headed straight to the local bookstore to pick up a recipe book. I skimmed through about 6-7 titles, and ended up buying Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook by Beth Hensperger and Julie Kaufmann. Most of its recipies are made from scratch and rarely use any canned ingridients. It also seems to have the best overall collection of recipies.
Yesterday, I had a few friends over and we had ourselves a feast. I cooked quite a few things in the slow cooker:
- Lamb Goulash (which was ruined/overcooked - the first thing I ever done in this slow cooker)
- Chicken Casseatore (not sure about spelling, it's from the Cuisinart booklet) came out nicely, it was around the time that I started looking closely after the cooking process.
- Short Ribs In Red Wine were perfect, here, again, the cooking time was 5 hours instead of 7 hours indicated in the recipe.
Overall, I am happy. I didn't experience any of the problems reported by some reviewers. I can safely recommend this appliance.

Cuisinart FRC-800 Rice Plus Multi-Cooker with Fuzzy Logic Technology Review

Cuisinart FRC-800 Rice Plus Multi-Cooker with Fuzzy Logic Technology
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this rice/oatmeal/slow cooker now for 6 months. This machine cooks all kinds of rice extremely well and that's what it primarily was designed to do. You can cook sushi, brown, risotto, etc. rices and they turn out perfect. They also stay warm and perfectly moist if you need to set the keep warm function. The parts remove easily for cleaning.
The easy to read display doesn't tell you how many minutes it will take to cook your rice choice. You have to read through the instruction booklet to find out how long each cycle is. A countdown function of remaining time would have been really nice. The first time I made brown rice my family waited almost 2 hours to eat dinner.
This machine doesn't do the extra stuff very well. I made 1 cup of steel cut (Irish) oatmeal with 2 cups of water in a machine designed to hold 8 cups of water. The frothy water boiled over, out of the steam hole, and into the electronics board. It fried the circuit board. Fortunately the unit comes with a 3 years, no questions asked warranty. Cuisinart sent me a replacement unit for $10 shipping/handling.
The slow cooker function runs on the equivalent of "high" temperature for a slow cooker. They don't tell you that in the user manual. When you use the unit on slow cooker, the first 10 minutes of the cycle sautes whatever you put in the pan. This is useful if you need to brown meat or onions.
I love Cuisinart but this one doesn't live up to the usual quality of Cuisinart products. I have the machine and will use it 'till it dies, but I don't know if I would buy another.

We used this product at our baby shower to hold toppings for a baked potato bar. It kept the food extremely warm without burning anything and we had no issues at all with changing the temperatures of each individual pot. The pots themselves feel like they are a great quality and we've had success washing them both in our dishwasher and by hand. It does take up a bit of real estate on the counter, but it is well worth it as opposed to having 3 separate slow cookers side by side. This is a must for any party host or hostess!

Crockpot SCVP600-W Oval 6-Quart Smart-Pot Slow Cooker, White Review

Crockpot SCVP600-W Oval 6-Quart Smart-Pot Slow Cooker, White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this just over a year ago and we've used it extensively. As long as you do soups and very moist meats (lots of liquids) it works fine. It is much too hot for most slow cooking and it will dry out foods on the warm setting.
Even with all of that, I got used to using it. However, the handle to the lid just broke off today and you must buy a whole new lid if you are out of warranty. That is $18.00!!! Rival says that this isn't a known issue and so maybe I'm the unlucky one. Also, when I called customer support, they were very unwilling to give me information about this problem. It seemed to me that they are aware of it, but don't want it publicized. When I asked the rep how long she had worked there, she replied that she couldn't give me that information because of "security concerns". I just wanted to know what level of experience she had!
If you are not going to leave it alone for very long or you only cook with lots of liquids, this may work out for you as it did for me for a year. If you want to have a long lasting more versatile slow cooker, you should probably look elsewhere. And after reading the reviews on most of the other Rival crockpots, I have decided that my initial feelings were justified and I will take Rival products out of my considerations.

My work schedule changed and I wanted to get a programmable crock to make dinner less of an ordeal as I couldn't rely on my non-programmable crock to not leave my meal totally dried up by the time I got home. I had read really bad reviews of the Rival Smart Pot so I went with this one.
I love it. I've made a few of my "old standby" meals (like a roast with a packet of onion soup mix and a can of diet coke) and they have turned out SO much better than with my old non-programmable crock.
It's easy to use, it doesn't burn, have hot spots or leave the dish dried out. I highly recommend it!

This crockpot smelled like paint the first time I used it. I wish I had taken it back then. The handle on the lid broke around the one year mark. I called Rival, but they were of no help--the lids were out of stock and they offered no other solutions. I screwed in a knob from an older pot and it worked better than the original one. Then one of the handles on the side cracked. It still worked, but I have to use caution and warn my family when picking it up. This crockpot cooks extremely hot. Most of the time I cook on low, but sometimes warm is what other crockpots would consider low.Somehow a crack occurred around the bottom corner. A crusty line was on the outside of the crock when I removed it for serving. After one and a half years, I'm shopping for a different brand crockpot. My advice--don't buy it!

Deni Oval Electric Pressure Cooker Review

Deni Oval Electric Pressure Cooker
Average Reviews:

Our first Deni went dead after one use. Deni customer service (Keystone Manufacturing) was outstanding though. Since it was a large heavy item, all they required was for the power cord to be cut off and mailed back to them, at which point they sent out a brand new pressure cooker. Unfortunately, the 2nd one arrived with the plastic base pretty much shattered, although there was no damage evident on the box. No problem! Customer service sent another replacement out immediately with no questions. Unfortunately (again), the new unit died after only 2 or 3 uses (at least it lasted longer than the 1st one!). So while their customer service seems great, this particular pressure cooker seems to die pretty easily (at least at higher altitude of the Rocky Mountain region). The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars is due to the customer service.

Cut cooking times up to 70-percent compared to conventional cooking methods with this 8-1/2-quart electric pressure cooker. It combines steam, heat, and pressure--while retaining all the nutrients and flavor of food--for delicious home-cooked meals like pot roast, chili, vegetable stew, chicken and rice, and more. The pressure cooker provides a removable nonstick aluminum inner cooking pot for even heat distribution, and its push-button digital control panel makes it easy to select from a variety of cooking functions. Choose the warm function to reheat or keep cooked food warm, the brown function to brown food before cooking it under pressure, the steam function to boil liquid for steaming food or cooking rice, or the slow-cook function with a 9-1/2-hour programmable timer for slowly cooking food--great for having dinner ready and waiting after a long day at the office.
The appliance also offers cooking-mode indicator lights, a delay-time feature for cooking food up to eight hours later, a built-in thermostat for automatic temperature control, and three pressure settings: high (15 psi), medium (7.5 psi), and low (2.5 psi). To help ensure safe operation, the unit supplies a pressure-regulator knob, an internal pressure-release system, a locking pin to prevent the lid from being opened while under pressure, and an automatic shut-off valve that activates before pressure exceeds its maximum capacity. Other highlights include a steam-release valve for fast release of pressure, a sliding lock-and-unlock safety cover latch, and plastic side handles with finger guards for convenient transport. A user manual with recipes comes included. Housed in cool-touch brushed stainless steel, the multi-function pressure cooker measures 16 by 12-1/2 by 14-3/4 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

I finally convinced my wife to replace the old but still functional single switch rice cooker I'd owned for about 10 years. I have longed for something with an off switch so rice doesn't burn to the bottom when I forget to unplug it. This guy was the ticket.
It seems like a fairly complex machine but its really easy to use once you understand the setup. Its well designed. The pot is easy to clean and the inner lid snaps off for easy cleaning as well.
I have to say the rice it produces is some of the best I have had. I did a side by side cookoff with the old and the new rice cookers. The same rice just seemed to have more consistant texture and better strong flavor. Definatley worth the upgrade since we do lots of rice.
The one drawback I found is with the somewhat misleading specifications. They say this is a "5 cup" rice cooker. So I'm thinking 5 cups=40oz. Plenty big enough for a family of 4. Well its not quite that much. It seems in Asia (on the metric system) their idea of a cup is a teacup. If you look at the picture and see the two little cups next to the machine, it will hold 5 of THOSE cups. Those cups are approximatley 6oz each. So really it is a 4 (American) cup rice cooker, not 5. Of course 3/4 of a cup is about how much rice you'll eat in a meal so one run of this machine should be able to produce rice for 5. If you need more that that consider the NS-ZAC18 10 cup (8 cup) model.
The trick to the machine is to use the little cups that come with it. You measure out a few "cups" of rice and dump it into the pot. Then you add water and fill it up to the graduated mark on the inside of the pot. So if you toss in 2 cups you add water until you hit the 2 cup mark. It has different markings for Brown, White and Sushi rice.
Before discovering the proper way of using the smaller "cups" I used a regular 8oz cup on some Jasmine rice (then filled it to the designated level). It still came out way better than my rice cooker. It was firm but not hard and full of flavor. So if you screw up or loose your little "cup" you can still get great rice as long as the stickness is not absolutely critical to the receipe.
The manual makes a huge deal out of its ability to handle some "no rinse" rice who's milling technology was proudly developed in Japan. They devote pages to the setting and cooking it, but actually its pretty similar to the regular rice, you just use the green cup instead of the clear cup.
All in all this is a great little machine. If you want the best and are willing to pay the bucks this is the one to get. You will not feel your money is wasted.
Update:
Its now 6 years later and countless batches of rice and this little thing is still going strong. The pot has a few scratches from years of continous daily use but its holding up.
We expanded our use of this little gem. I've learned not to think of it as just a rice producing device but as a rice cooker + modified crock pot. My wife started using it to produce porriage and then later soup. She'll pour the ingredients in the night before, set the timer and her breakfast is ready 30 minutes before she wakes up. You can use it for grain soups, porriage, oatmeal and more. We buy packs of Thai flavored rice that say were supposed to cook on the stove. We dump the stuff in and hit go. They come out plenty tastey.
There is a quick cooking cycle that we use a lot. Shaves about 20 minutes off the cook time. Flavor suffers a little (though its still great) but when your in a rush...
Perhaps the most amazing thing however is what it does to brown rice. As a kid I was never fond of brown rice. Too hard and crunch and I was never that big on bran flavor. We got some brown rice and started cooking it in this thing and it was a whole new world. I don't know how it did it but it came out soft, a little chewey and decent tasting. Brown rice was now something worth eating vs avoiding.
So if for whatever reason you are looking to switch to brown rice but not thrilled with the flavor do yourself a favor and get one of these units. It makes it a whole new experience.
We haven't tried steaming anything yet. Maybe when our steamer breaks..

Several hours of my life were wasted pondering what rice cooker to purchase. There are dozen options available and I too was originally getting sucked into the though larger price tag =better rice, how wrong I was. Simple, easy to use, affordable and perfect brown rice on the first try (no easy task). Save your money for Vegas, this is all you need.

A complete, healthy, fat-free meal can easily be prepared in this electric rice cooker. The nonstick removable inner pot produces up to 6 cups of cooked rice, while the steaming basket holds enough vegetables or shrimp for one or two hungry people. Simple to operate, the cooker features just one switch and two settings, cook and keep warm. During cooking, a red light is illuminated; when cooking is complete, the switch automatically reverts to the keep-warm setting and a yellow light comes on. Moisture and nutrients are sent back into the cooker by the domed glass lid, which also allows for easy viewing. After cooking, the rice should be allowed to sit for about five to seven minutes before removing the lid. Accessories include a measuring cup and a plastic rice paddle for stirring and serving the rice. The cup, paddle, pot, and steamer all should be washed by hand in hot, soapy water after each use. The rice cooker, including its stay-cool side loop handles, measures approximately 11-1/2 by 8-1/2 by 10 inches.
