All-Clad Stainless 7-Quart Stockpot with Pasta Insert Review

All-Clad Stainless 7-Quart Stockpot with Pasta Insert
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My family gave me this set for Mothers Day. I really love it. The heating is very even in this pan. I never need to use heat over med to cook. I can cook 1 1/2 pounds of pasta. The insert holes are too small for pasta to pass through. When lifting pasta out you have to do so slowly to allow the water to drain into the pan. I then leave the insert at an angle to serve from the pot this keeps the pasta warm. I was able to cook 6-8 ears of corn-on-the-cob by standing the ears on end. I can cook large quantities of vegetables and drain to serve without effort. The stockpot is great. It is deep enough to make jams without the jam splashing out of the pan onto the stove like my other stockpot. The set is too big to fit in the dishwasher with the dishes from the meal, but it does fit. I am able to clean it easily after cooking, even cooked jam without much effort at all. This set is a very practical addition to my kitchen.

Weber 2820 Smokey Mountain Cooker/Smoker Review

Weber 2820 Smokey Mountain Cooker/Smoker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Weber Smokey Mountain (WSM) is really the king of the bullet smokers. You may be tempted to go with a cheaper Brinkmann model, and if your budget just can't afford the WSM, then you can do some prefectly acceptible bbq on the brinkmann.
But if you can afford the extra for the WSM, you will get much better temperature control, and getting good temperature control means you can keep a good consistent low temeperature for doing some truly outstanding smoke cooking.
I am by no means an expert on the subject, only having used my WSM about 10 times. Even so, I have been getting results better than any ribs I have tasted at any restaurant (with the exception of real honest to goodness BBQ joints that cook over hardwood for 12 hours plus...). You can tell real barbecue because it has a pink smoke ring in the meat, which I always get when I use the WSM.
You will want to check on the net for the virtual WSM web page, it has a lot of information, and I found the info there a lot more useful than the methods recommended in the owner's manual.
This cooker is not for the impatient who want instant results, your first few times using it may be frustrating until you learn to control where the temperature is going, not where it is right now. But stick with it and you will start to make some truly great bbq. And understand that you are going to be cooking low and slow, which means it is going to take 4, 5, 6 hours or more to do ribs, but once you get the hang of it, they will be some of the best ribs you have tasted.
More than a fair number of barbecue champions use the WSM get results as good as if not better than those guys using the $1000 plus offset pits. The WSM is a great value and the perfect starter "pit" for someone thinking about getting into serious barbecue.
(You can do yourself a favor by using hickory wood chunks as part of the fuel, and real lump charcoal, not briquettes. Briquettes are nice and all, but they are filled with clay and other impurities, really if you are going to the trouble of using charcoal instead of gas, go with real charcoal if you can find it)

All Clad Electric Griddle Review

All Clad Electric Griddle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I enjoy All-Clad's quality cookware and I have their handsome slow-cooker but I have a passion for griddles and this one doesn't cut it. Non-stick is a non-durable finish. I have All-Clad non-stick and it's worthless after the first year. Non-stick Aluminum is a flimsy deal for $300. I can get a Presto grill like that for $30 which I won't mind tossing in a year or two. For $300, I would expect a griddle to be durable for many years. This one indicates it has "thermostats" but it's not clear whether it has thermostatic control. Most likely it cycles the heat on and off based on a timing switch just like the cheap ones -- but if it doesn't, All-Clad isn't saying because they don't document this griddle on their website at all as of December 2009. Their electrics don't impress me as my slow-cooker boils everything on the low setting (We're at 5000 feet where water boils at about 200F). I have a feeling All-Clad's headed the way of Kitchen-Aide -- once renowned for their mixers and now known for every piece of imported junk you can think of.
A quick look at [...] shows that real thermostatic electric griddles with polished steel plates are a little pricier than All-Clad's mini griddle here. Why would they make world-class pans that nobody in the world would be ashamed to use but down-class their electrics to fit among the junk at the all-import stores?

Rival RO1801BR-S Stainless Steel Oval Roaster Oven Review

Rival RO1801BR-S Stainless Steel Oval Roaster Oven
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used my new roaster for the first time today on a small prime rib roast. The roast cooked in less than 90 minutes and came out just right with no effort. The roaster is simple to use & clean-up was a breeze. I was really excited to read the enclosed pamphlet, and learn of so many other applications for this roaster! My entire intention was to use it for large meats on occasions when I need my oven for side dishes. I will be steaming veggies, baking potatoes & other goodies, and I can't wait to use it as a warm-dish buffet on Christmas (after we pull the prime ribe out) when I have a house full of people!
I had no issue with unsafe or injurious steam release, as per the previous review. However, I did not "steam" my roast. I would recommend that when using steam for cooking, in ANY venue, you use general caution with hand & face placement, and of course always use a pot holder or oven mit - it seems to work fine for me, as I've never aquired a steam injury, thankfully.
I enjoy having this roaster so much in fact, that my mother will be receiving one for Christmas!

Orka Silicone Tajine Review

Orka Silicone Tajine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have an Orka silicone steamer, which I adore (see other review). The tagine, however, is a bit of a mixed bag. I bought this tajine as a gift and here, in short, are the pros and cons. I haven't used it to cook, firsthand, so I am really just reviewing its design elements. However, if it cooks anything like the steamer does, I assume the food produced is excellent.
Pros: easy-to-clean silicone; withstands high heat; can go in the oven or the microwave; dishwasher safe
Cons: really too small to be a good tajine, unless you're cooking for one; not the sturdiest construction, would really benefit from a more stable bottom; grips on the top portion would be nice as well
Because of its small size, the couple who I bought it for can hardly ever find an occasion to use it.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Orka Silicone Tajine

The traditional method of cooking in North Africa--the tagine--has been used for centuries to slow cook foods with spices. Little water is needed to keep foods moist, and the unique design of the tagine lid locks in flavors. Orka's tagine, made of 100 percent premium silicone instead of the traditional clay, turns any cut of meat into a tender meal. Excellent for braising at low temperatures, the tagine has two parts; a flat base unit with low sides, and a large cone-shaped lid that rests inside the base during cooking. The lid's unique design returns all of the condensation to the base. The base can be taken to the table for serving. Flexible and unbreakable, this silicone tajine is safe in the oven, microwave, and dishwasher. It measures 1-2/5 inch by 7-1/5 inches by 7-7/10 inches and carries a five-year warranty.

West Bend 84396 6-Quart Oval Electronic Crockery Cooker, Stainless Steel Review

West Bend 84396 6-Quart Oval Electronic Crockery Cooker, Stainless Steel
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this slow cooker almost a year ago and have been very happy with it. I spent a good couple of weeks looking over reviews and asking family and friends for recommendations before I invested in a slow cooker - I wanted one that would last and I didn't need all of the fancy features that a lot of the newer models are offering.
This West Bend is easy to use, easy to clean, and (after almost a year) I've had no problems to speak of. The stainless steel look is great, the ceramic insert is nice and heavy, and the lid fits snugly. It does have a timer feature - which you can only set by the hour - which I would say is the only down side. There is a definite difference between the low and high heat settings. Personally I cook most things on low (it is a SLOW cooker), I only switch to high when I'm in a hurry or need to thicken up a stew or stroganoff. I've tried cooking a number of different things in this slow cooker and everything always comes out great!
It was definitely worth looking around and reading reviews on other appliances before I settled on this one. The price was right and it works wonderfully. I don't own any other West Bend products (I'm usually a KitchenAid girl) but this was definitely a good choice.
Highly recommend it!

I received these and tried a few out over the last couple of days, and they seem pretty nice. Be aware, the tongs are kind of large, an have a wide profile and flat bottom edges. Also, though the set pictures a slotted spoon, I actually received a second spatula, the second not slotted, instead of the spoon. I'm not sure if everyone will, or if this was temporary or an error.

Nostalgia Buffet Stations with Warming Tray Review

Nostalgia Buffet Stations with Warming Tray
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very attractive stainless steel Buffet Server. We used it a couple of times over the Holidays, and it worked out quite well. It kept the hors d'oeuvres nice and worm and at a safe temperature. We received quite a few complements from company on the server. Most people don't have one of these in there home, so it is somewhat of a novelty. So much nicer to have hot snacks plus the old standard chips & dips, crackers & cheese and the other cold snacks that it seems every one serves.
I originally thought I could also use this as a server on the dinner table, but the 1 1/2 quart bins seem to small to serve 4 or more people. Plus you cant pass the bins around on a sit down meal since they are to hot. Best to take the bins off, and just use the hot plate underneath to put your serving bowls on. You would probably need the 2 1/2 quart size if you wanted this for a dinner buffet. The only negative I have so far is the clear plastic covers that go over the bins don't have a slot in them to keep a serving spoon in. You have to put them elsewhere, which seemed a bit awkward to me. But all and all this server worked out nicely for us.

Dr. Weil 9802 The Healthy Kitchen Rice Cooker - Model 9802 Review

Dr. Weil 9802 The Healthy Kitchen Rice Cooker - Model 9802
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was on the verge of purchasing this cooker because one health website described the cooking bowl surface as made from anodized aluminum rather than coated with nonstick material. However, the Waterford customer service(linked from a Weil website as a main seller) says it IS in fact coated. The rationale is that the cooker max temp. is 300 degrees and since teflon only reacts and leaches past 400 degrees, chemical interaction with food is minimized or eliminated. I understand that even current "advanced" coatings still flake, erode, end up in one's food. With wear, they make cleaning harder, not easier. How does the coating affect appliance longevity? And why is a coating (also environmentally unhealthy to produce) even necessary for a steam cooker and fairly low temperatures? I manage to clean my Calphalon plain anodized alum. pots just fine. Was this cooker ever made with anodized alum., as I read? If so, I hope Dr. Weil will consider returning to that. Many of us are trying to reduce plastic contact with food. It's very disappointing that "Healthy Kitchen" products are apparently add to the plastic problem. Dr. Weil might help consumers by making material content specifics widely available online and wherever these products are sold. All I could find on this cooker was an instruction .pdf booklet that reveals little about materials. Anyone who has sought glass, pyrex, good ceramics, stainless, etc. in their cooking equipment knows how hard one must work to find this info., but I expect better from Dr. Weil. Thanks, and I hope this information helps others. Anyone who knows of a truly clean, solid, low-plastic, multi-use cooker, please post!

Proctor Silex 32700 6.5-Quart Portable Roaster Oven, White Review

Proctor Silex 32700 6.5-Quart Portable Roaster Oven, White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I only used this product 3 times and although the chicken/turkey/roast I prepared turned out well, I'm very disappointed in the quality of this product...so much so I'm throwing this one out and already shopping for something of higher quality. Unfortunately, I didn't save the original carton or else I'd return it for a refund. The lid is chinsy/ thin/ aluminum (or maybe it's tin) that looks like whatever 'spray coating' they were giving it at the factory never got finished.
The roasting pan sides burn and scorch (even though nothing is touching the sides) and no matter what I've used, it doesn't get clean. I also noticed 3 small uniform chips in the finish of the roasting pan that were obviously a defect and not caused by usual wear and tear. At this point I'm actually concerned, health-wise, about continuing to cook with this product.
I love roasting pans...quick, convenient, easy but I would shop for something of better quality.

Cobb Premier Portable Stainless Steel Grill & Smoker Review

Cobb Premier Portable Stainless Steel Grill and Smoker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had mine for about a month now, and have done 3 chickens, 2 tri-tip roasts and a DOUBLE rack of Baby-backs... and am gearing up to try baking/smoking a pile of shortribs soon.
So far, I have only used the roasting rack to cook with...wet mesquite chips wrapped in heavy alum. foil in the firebasket smoke the meat nicely, just perfect. Surprised compliments from everyone who've tasted the results. Chicken, in 1 1/2 to 2 hours, comes out so tender you'll wonder if it's really done (it is). The Babybacks smoked up wonderful and were as tender as you'd want.
I'm a tri-tip guy, and all my friends step back in respect when I approach a grill with a Tri-tip in hand. I'm good at it. This Cobb Grill makes the best I've ever had.
Pro's:
*Convenient for apartments, small patios, any lifestyle or condition when you want the BBQ to come out and go back to stashed away. It is small, compact, all the accoutrements fit comfortably into the carrying case, even the extra accessories you might buy. Speaking of which, search the internet for the cheapest roasting rack...some will sell this wire rack for $39...it's about an $6 item, but if you can find one for $15, get one. You'll use it for roasting and allows you to NOT need to turn over the ribs, chicken, etc. during the cooking process. It's probably the most convenient of all the accessories.
*Easy setup, easy stash. Minimal fuel (10-12 briquettes).
*A moat! You can add water, soda, beer, etc., in the built-in moat and you get results like doing a Beer-can chicken. Most moist and great taste for everything. Results are great.
*Easy to smoke meats. Add your wet chips to the firebowl when you put on the meat. I've been using about 2 tablespoons of chips for a nice amount of smoke flavor.
*Both portable and movable. Not only is this little thing really portable, it can be moved anytime during the grilling by just picking it up with your bare hands. Its sides are cool. It's halfway to 'Kid-Friendly' and is a pretty safe grill to have around kids. The dome is hot, but the sides are not. This is especially handy if you want to shuffle ribs or flip some meat halfway thru cooking...I just pick it up and carry it to the kitchen where I can flip things without making a mess...then I take it outside again. Very handy!
*Set it and Ferget it. The nice thing is that you don't have to bother with the grill while its cooking. Go party. Relax. All you need is a timer to figure out when its all done. Because you are using a moat and liquid (if you do) it's hard to over-cook anything.
I haven't tried doing a plain steak yet, or hamburgers, without the lid...that's next week's project.
Cons: Expensive. I bought mine on sale for $85 and was lucky to get it at that. The accessories are expensive. The wok, the frying pan are well designed and might be worth the loot, but the roasting rack is just a wire grid who's legs happen to fit into the ring-holes of the included grill plate. At the mfg. cost of the wire rack, they should be throwing this thing in for free. Once you get your unit home, you can look for workable racks in thrift shops.
You can still find the earlier models, with the black plastic sides, available at a steep discount, around $50. These would be worth getting to save money. The new models are the ones with the stainless mesh sides.
*Cleaning. If you throw some sliced lemons in the moat-water, cleanup will be easier. The thing should to be cleaned after each use, which could be problematic for RV'rs. The quality non-stick grill surfaces are no problem, but the wire racks and the main steel bowl can need lotsa water or some soaking. You can rough clean it with paper towels and finish it at home, if you're off camping. Dawn Direct Foam works really well.
*Slow cooking, lower heat. Because it uses lower heat for a longer time, figure that it's going to be 2 hours for a chicken or a tri-tip, 2 1/2 hours for ribs unless you want to refill the firebox and go for 4 hours. That includes the 1/2 hour for the coals to get right.*Charcoal starter matches make things easier, so when you find them for sale, buy several boxes. The matches found on the Cobb site are overpriced. They run about $2.50 a box in grocery stores, and there are two kinds, the giant ones and the smaller ones. 8 to the box and 20 to the box, respectively. 2 big ones do it, or 4 small ones will light your charcoal just fine. DON'T leave the dome on while the charcoal is flaming/lighting, you'll start to melt the top handle (my stupid). Leave the dome off to speed the charcoal lighting.
All in all, I think this is an ideal charcoal grill that almost guarantees you'll wow yourself, your family and friends with the incredible results. It's slightly different cooking than the normal charcoal BBQ grill, so you'll learn to make your cooking adjustments...and you'll love the results. I would (and do) recommend this little baby to anyone who'll listen. My friends all recommend my using this as often as they can talk me into it.7/17/2010..........And now I've had it for awhile...just got back in town after being on the road for a bit....the first thing I did when I 'unhitched' was to fire up the Cobb and slam a Tri Tip on it. I'm still using it, still loving it, it's still in great shape, and still does a great job. My favorite seasoning is still Santa Maria Tri Tip Seasoning by Righetti Specialties, and a healthy dose of Bacon Salt never hurts nothing! Love this grill.

Schlemmertopf Classic Glazed Clay Cooker, Medium Review

Schlemmertopf Classic Glazed Clay Cooker, Medium
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I found my first Schlemmertopf at a yard sale, never used and with instructions. Ten years later I own 6 different sizes including some Romertopf brands. I don't use anything else for baking, ever, with the exception being obvious things like pizzas or cookies. So far I have found many of mine second-hand; I believe this is because people don't use the bakers properly and think they don't work.

Let me be clear on this: you need to read the instructions. I'm not used to doing that, so I'm very grateful I did this time. You MUST soak the baker in water before using for the first several times. The terra cotta absorbs the water and then diffuses it inside the baker during cooking. This creates a moist atmosphere and a naturally-occurring broth for meats. After it becomes seasoned with regular use, you rarely or never have to soak it again. Soap, cleaners or the dishwasher must never be used as the terra cotta absorbs the "flavor" of soap and this will ruin your food, however they clean up really well with water. The bakers turn out perfect, moist roasts, meatloafs (no need for a special meatloaf pan!) and chickens and food generally cooks in less time. The coloring of the bakers will change with use, just chalk it up to part of the charm of using "real" cookware.
Whenever I am cooking for company, they ask about the bakers - apparently few people have seen them or know anything about them. For that reason, they make great gifts for people who love to (or simply have to) cook.

I received this for my bridal shower. I'd registered for the SCRC500-W but apparently, it's no longer available and this model has replaced it. I am most certainly very happy with this product. I made one of my recipes I usually cook on low on the stove top. I prepared it the night before and then in the morning, put it all into the crock pot and set it on low for 10 hours. When I got home, it was perfect. This is the first time I'd ever used a crock pot and I was very happy with the results. I very much love how once it finishes the cooking time, it will kick down to warm. It is a nice even heat that worked so well to make my dish so tender. The crock was extremely easy to clean when I was done. I'll be using this a lot.
