(More customer reviews)I just felt compelled to share what I've found out about slow cookers.
We purchased this model slow cooker a few months back to use about 1x per week.
After using it several times, I discovered to my horror that the ceramic inserts - the darker color glazes all contain lead to some degree. Despite the manufacturers claim that their slow cookers abide by the FDA standards set in place, I did not feel safe using this product. Although the amount of lead in the slow cooker may abide by FDA standards, this is not zero, I believe that the FDA allows 7ppm to leach into the food over a 24 hour period to be considered "safe". There is currently no known safe level for lead exposure. Since I am cooking for my family, including a 2 year old, I decided to stop using this appliance. Lead doesn't leave your system, and accumulates over time, this is not exactly what I want swimming around my homemade chicken soup! After contacting the company, and asking if their slow cooker had any amounts of lead, and if so how much, I was told that information was proprietary! So, in other words, yes, our product contains lead, but we won't tell you how much it contains. Ridiculous!
After doing a bit more research online, I have come to find out that the white slow cookers are the way to go. Hamilton Beach was tested and found to have zero levels of lead leaching into the food after heating it for 2 days.
Bottom line is do your research before buying these appliances. Stay away from the dark color inserts, stick to white, and hamilton beach appears to be the safest from the research I've done.

(More customer reviews)After purchasing this unit, I too had spill over at very low water rice levels. I realized that this is the same problem one would get,using even medium heat to cook grits, or rice in a regular pot.......
(If you leave the top of the pot down tight.)
There is no way, because of the high heat setting of this unit, that the glass lid supplied can be used to completely cover the cooking pot, even though the instruction book indicates so.. The hole would have to be much larger to allow steam to escape.
The temperature setting of the heating dictates the designer set it high to allow the use of the steaming attachment, using a high boiling point
The steam will push the oxygen mols from the pot causing a very low barometric air pressure.
With this the bubbles generated by the boiling rice water will have almost no air pressure to keep them low or at minimum.{ they expand greaty), Thus foaming out the sides of the pot.
Even though I could not find in the instruction that the glass top would not work if it was used to completely cover the cooker top while cooking, the picture on the box was a clue.
The picture shows the steamer unit sitting in place, with the glass lid on top.
Using the steamer attachment, 2 measures of rice using plastic, and 2 1/3 cups of water using a measuring cup, I started the unit.
A few bubbles and steam came up through the bottom of the steamer, for a while, and than decreased. ( no boil over ). Once the temperature in the unit exceeded 220 degrees ( all water boiled off) : the unit went into stand-by.
Perfectly cooked rice.Every time

I use the steamer unit, even if I not even steaming vegetable or etc.No boil over. It has many holes in it to allow steam excapement with out
boil over. Caution........... The steamer tray gets as hot as the steam generated in the cooking process.
Do not touch the steamer tray attachment with-out waiting for it to cool, and keep this unit well away from the reach of children, or uncovered,
un-protected hands. In this cooling time the "laden" heat in the left over steam can return to the rice, and complete the cooking cycle.
If the water is allowed to boil out, burnt rice at the bottom.

33550 Cooker & Steamer Review

(More customer reviews)I've enjoyed this slow cooker for about 2 years but today the one of the plastic feet on the base fell off. It cracked and dropped right off. Not sure why, because it hasn't been handled roughly, and hasn't been taken out of my home or used excessively. Also the "stainless steel" around the outside is really just a think sheet of metal that isn't fitted together properly and seems a bit cheap. I love the ceramic crock itself with glass lid and the big rubber-band like thing to keep the top on for travel. The crock comes clean pretty easily. Maybe cooks a little faster than it should on low. But it's the base I have a problem with. To their credit Hamilton Beach will probably send me a whole new cooker but I have to pay to send the base to them first. It's worth the trouble but I may just get a new one anyway.

(More customer reviews)I loved my crockpot, but the crock part lasted less than two years (and yes, I followed instructions regarding not immersing a hot crock in cold water, and filling at least half way). The crock cracked slightly after using only a few times (which I read somewhere was normal). As of today, the crock part is no longer usable and I see that the company's website doesn't have replacement parts for this particular model, which means I'll have to buy an entire new slow cooker. I loved my crockpot and used it all the time, but having recently lost a job, I can't really afford to replace it at this time. I'm very disappointed. I expect my appliances to last more than a year and a half.

33172 Cooker & Steamer Review

(More customer reviews)I've been a widow for many years and almost completely stopped cooking for myself. This pot has made cooking fun and challenging. I'm able to cook large meals and portion and freeze them. I now go to my freezer for a home cooked meal ( not to the local restaurant - where I can't control the ingredients).
