Toastess Msc-570 Dgtl Slow Cooker 4qt Review

Toastess Msc-570 Dgtl Slow Cooker 4qt
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Background:
The problem with most modern slow cookers (even the newest Rival models) is they put 600W elements in
them and they cook way too fast (the reason is that people used to run the old crock pots without the lids and get
food poisoning because it would never reach 160F). Either that or they go cheap and put in a teflon coated steel
crock. This was only one of a few "real" slow cookers that I could find with digital controls.
Features:
- 170W element
- low/high/warm settings
- timer
- thermostat controlled
- taller-then-wide crock (this is better then the common short-and-wide --
it allows the water to convect and holds in the heat better)
- removable ceramic crock
- pretty good materials and build quality
I put it up in a head-to-head battle with our old 5qt Rival from the 70s:
Old 5qt Rival ---------------------
* 180W@low, 245W@high
* crock content temperature when set at LOW:
- 155F @ 3hr
- 175F @ 4hr
- 190F @ 5hr
- 193F @ 6hr
* crock content temperature when set at HIGH:
- 208F @ 6hr
Notes: The outside of the pot got scalding hot after 2 hours.
Toastess MSC-570 ---------------
* 177W@Low,177W@high,177W@warm
* crock content temperature when set at LOW:
- 160F @ 3hr
- 170F @ 4hr
- 190F @ 5hr
- 193F @ 6hr
* crock content temperature when set at HIGH:
- 212F @ 6hr
Notes:
- The outside of the pot could be touched without getting burned
even on HIGH.
- On HIGH, the contents came to a light simmer
- It always uses the same power however it controls the
temperature with on-off cycles with the thermostat
Summary ---------------
I've done a lot of research and in my opionion the MSC-570 is a real slow
cooker and in that regard is arguably the best slow cooker on the market
today (KitchenAid makes a really good slow cooker but it has reliability problems).
It is actually a very popular slow cooker in the UK sold under a different name.
Given its price it is a bargain.

Kalorik SC-11047 3-1/2-Quart Stainless-Steel Slow Cooker Review

Kalorik SC-11047 3-1/2-Quart Stainless-Steel Slow Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've just used my Kalorik slow cooker for the first time and it did a good job. I started it out on high for the first hour and then turned it down to low, so it took 7-1/2 hours for the turkey thighs to come to 180ยบ which made me feel like they were safely cooked long enough. I believe they could have cooked longer if necessary (if I wasn't home). Using the auto setting probably would have done the same - it is suppose to cook high at first and then turn itself down to low.
Next time I'll know how much the crock can hold so will reduce the recipe to just 3 thighs or 2 breast-halves and only 3/4 pound of vegetables instead of the 4 thighs and 1-1/4 pounds of vegetables the recipe called for. That way the crock will not be filled too high. The USDA recommends only filling a crock between 1/2 to 2/3 full. Even so, this slow cooker did not boil over despite broth being just 1/2" below the top edge.
The plastic handles never were too hot to use and the crock cooled down pretty quickly after the unit was unplugged. One thing you might want to know is that although the outside container appears to be thick stainless steel, it is actually somewhat thin - can be pushed in easily. That does not bother me, but I will be careful not to dent it. For the low cost, I would not have expected it to be more heavy duty. It does polish quite easily with a swipe by a dishcloth and looks nice. It does not slide around - stays firmly in place on its rubber feet and its glass lid did not rattle as it cooked.
Inside the box was a note warning that the dial was marked wrong - so the setting that is marked with one dot is not the low setting as the manual says - instead one dot stands for high while two dots stands for low. Also, just so you know, the manual explains that both the high and low settings allow the temperature of what is cooking to eventually come to the very same temperature - the difference is in how long it takes to reach that temperature. The manual also points out that it is the sides of the cooker that turn hot - not the bottom at all - this is so that whatever is on the bottom will not burn and stick.
The slow cooker puts off an odor and possibly smoke when first used, so it is recommended that you run it for 10 minutes in a ventilated room - this I did and found it to be true, so I am glad I opened a window nearby.
The reason I only give it 4 stars is because the manual says none of the parts can be washed in the dishwasher. This was a surprise - I would have thought the crock and the lid could have been.

I purchased one of these for a Christmas gift last year for friends and they loved it as it provided the perfect item to help with the holiday meals. My cousins do a lot of things for their church in a food manner and they loved it and were happy to have it, using it within the first week of getting it. Both parties say that while it might look hard to clean, the opposite is the case.
Great item and the price is super.

This crock pot works very well and is easy to use. My only complaint is that after about 1 year of use, the handle fell apart. On the Crock pot web site, no replacement lids were available for purchase.
The last round crock pot I owned lasted 18 years! It just seems a bit wasteful to throw this one away.

Kuhn Rikon Duromatic Top Pressure Cooker 7.4-Quart Review

Kuhn Rikon Duromatic Top Pressure Cooker 7.4-Quart
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This pressure cooker is probably the best on the market and a perfect size for a family. But, watch what you are purchasing, there are 2 separate types of lids on the Duromatic pressure cooker. This is the superior lid as it is easier to see the pressure, and turn it down to appropriate settings-fast release, slow release, with minimal effort. The other Kuhn Rikon's are awesome too. As far as I can tell, they are the same, with the exception of the lid/release. If you have the extra money, this is worth it--especially if you are a beginner. I regret that I bought the duromatic set without realizing the difference in the lids. I guess on the bright side, it means that I have pressure cookers in different sizes now.
If you are nervous about pressure cooking, there are awesome books out there to help lead the way-including pressuring cooking for dummies. My favorite is Miss Vickies Book of Pressure Cooker recipes, also found on amazon. She also has a website that offers a lot of free information as well as free recipes (although some have a small charge).
So, cook your food faster, save energy, retain more nutrients, and serve delicious homemade meals that seem like you have spent all day in the kitchen.

I decided to buy this instead of an electric wok, so happy I did. This does everything from steaming vegetables to boiling water for pasta. We are using this more than the stove top. Very easy to clean, which is always a plus. In the picture it looks like the pan is similar to a grill, however both pans we received had flat bottoms. Don't bother reading directions as they can be confusing, something must have been lost in the translation. Just figure it out on your own.

A useful addition to any busy kitchen, this 4-1/2-liter cooking appliance features a 1200-watt heating base and two interchangeable inner pots. Use the 11-by-11-by-3-1/2-inch pot for menu items such as lentil soup, beef stew, vegetarian chili, or the savory Japanese-style hot pot, Shabu-shabu. Switch out the pot for the 11-by-11-by-1-1/2-inch grill pan to cook up breakfast items like pancakes and eggs or to grill salmon, hamburgers, or sirloin steak for dinner. Both the pot and the grill come with nonstick surfaces to ensure effortless food release and quick cleanup. For added convenience, the cooker heats up quickly and efficiently, and a sliding lever on the front of the unit makes it easy to control the temperature setting. A see-through tempered-glass lid with a stay-cool knob comes included. The ETL-approved pan measures 14 by 14-2/5 by 7-2/3 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

This slow cooker seems to cook my meals awfully quick! For instance, on LOW setting, the meat was cooked in 3 hours.
For me this is too fast...I could definitely see it cooking fast on the HIGH setting, but LOW? Fortunately, I am a SAHM, but if I had to go to work, my food would be burnt by the time I got home, not good.
I am waiting for the company's response re this concern...
I do however, LOVE the fast that my food is cooking w/lots of minerals!

Deni 6.5 qt. Electric Pressure Cooker
Average Reviews:

I just love this product. I have had mine over a month and have no complaints.
I bought it for my RV as we are in it quite a lot.
It won't heat up the kitchen like cooking on the stove would.
I love how fast and easy it cooks dishes to perfection.
My first try cooking I didn't quite get it right and had mush, but after that
I made sure the steam valve popped up and it cooked like a charm.
We had country style ribs for dinner last night. Yummmm.
I took it to work to show all the non believer's how fast you can cook a pot of beans.
Now they are sold too. I got the oval opposed to the round because I thought I would like it better.
I don't think you would be disappointed with this cooker at all.

Aroma ARC-1000 Professional Series 10-Cup Sensor Logic Rice Cooker Review

Aroma ARC-1000 Professional Series 10-Cup Sensor Logic Rice Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I picked this cooker up from Costco for under thirty bucks. If you don't want to spend a lot on a computerized rice cooker, this is the one for you. It's the cheapest fuzzy logic rice cooker on the market, but still makes great rice. It doesn't have a bunch of extra functions you'd never use, just white rice, brown rice, quick rice, and steam cook.
You have to play around a little with the amount of water when cooking the rice. If it's too dry, just add a little bit more water and leave it in keep warm mode for about 15 minutes. If you're planning on using keep warm mode, you also have to add a bit more water to keep the rice from burning to the bottom.
I've used mine for everything from steaming veggies to making steel cut oats. One thing I particularly like is that when you set the timer for steaming, it doesn't start counting down until the water is actually boiling.
The only thing I'd like better was if there were extra internal bowls available. I had originally bought this one thinking to use it until I got a more expensive rice cooker, but that purchase has been put on hold indefinitely simply because this one works so well.
To make steel cut oats, I use the brown rice function due to the long soaking time. Just add 4 cups water to every 1 cup of oats. Also add pat of butter or a bit of oil to the water to keep it from boiling over, and a pinch of salt. You can add raisins or other dried fruit if you like. I usually make a double batch, and it comes out perfect every time. Perfectly cooked with that unique chewy steel cut oat texture. No more soaking and making it on the stove for me.

Simply Calphalon Stainless Multipot Review

Simply Calphalon Stainless Multipot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this set to replace another pot of similar size. I figured that this would be a great deal - it's got inserts and it's from Calphalon at a great price too. The tempered glass cover fits well and is helpful because you can see inside without removing the cover although it spits when the pot is at a full and rapid boil. It's a stainless steel piece so it's not dark when you look inside like many other Calphalon pieces. The aluminum bottom is not the same as on their commercial or professional lines. It's a heavy-duty aluminum bottom attached to a stainless steel pot. Even though the pot along with the bottom is thicker and heavier than most other lines that do the same, it did not heat up like other Calphalon pieces that I own. Still, I cooked a stew at a slow simmer for six hours and it didn't burn at the bottom. A good thing.
This is the first time that I have inserts like these and I don't think much of the big insert. To cook pasta or food, you need to add an additional 2 quarts of water (the amount needed to touch the bottom of the insert) making it more time consuming to use. I will cook my pasta without the insert and may use the insert as a colander/drainer. The small insert is useful because you can steam items while boiling pasta or other items
All in all, a good pot not a great one at a great price.

New Hamilton Beach 6 Qt. Set 'N Forget Slow Cooker Comes With A Thermometer Probe For Meat Review

New Hamilton Beach 6 Qt. Set 'N Forget Slow Cooker Comes With A Thermometer Probe For Meat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As soon as autumn hit, cravings for comfort food also hit. But, comfort foods require long, slow cooking and because I'm unwilling to stay home watching and waiting all day, the idea of using a slow cooker seemed an excellent alternative. I have to admit that I haven't used a slow cooker since the early 70's and back then I really didn't have a clue how to properly use one, thus the meals weren't too tasty. After collecting dust for many years, I finally gave the cooker away. So, after 30 years, I began my search for the ideal "modern" slow cooker, debating about which size, what price and what features were suitable to my needs. In the 70's we didn't have so many choices - it was either harvest gold or avocado green with or without flower decoration, plus the switch was manual on, off, warm and sometimes auto. This 6 Qt. Hamilton Beach has excellent features - count-down digital timer, glass lid, removable ceramic insert, Probe/Manual/Program modes, Low/High/Warm/Off function, Automatic switchover to Warm (and stays there for 14-hrs), 3-year warranty and a 15 page instruction manual, but without recipes (English & Spanish). Amazon was selling it at a reduced price with shipping included - perfect! Amazon's price was also less expensive than what I saw in the local stores. Delivery was very prompt - I received it about 1 week after ordering. The digital programming feature is an excellent "modern" addition and well worth the extra expense. I used the probe while cooking a pot roast, but didn't find it too useful. After 5 hours the probe said the meat was cooked, which was correct, except since it was a pot roast it still required more slow cooking to break down the meat fibres - another 4 hours on Low did the trick. To add extra depth and flavour, I like to season, dredge and brown all meats, poultry or vegetables before adding to the crockery insert. It's well worth the extra time and effort. Also, be sure to reduce the cooking liquid to 2-1/2 cups, because extra liquid always accumulates by the end of the cooking cycle and you don't want the meal to taste like it's been boiled, unless you're making soup. So far, I've made barbecued pork ribs, soup with vegetable, beans, rice & ham hocks, beef stew, smoked pork picnic with veggies, chicken thighs & legs in barbecue sauce, beef pot roast with onions and veggies, pork chops in mushroom & onion gravy, beef short-ribs in a tomato-based sauce and each dish turned out perfectly and was very tasty. I've also made Chinese congee (or jook) in my smaller 3.5 qt. slow cooker with excellent results. Use your favourite recipe, but a ratio of 1-cup long-grain white rice to 10-cups chicken stock (or water) produces a good consistency - cook on Low for 10-hours. A big plus is that the slow cooker gives the opportunity to use less expensive, but tastier cuts of meat. The 6 quart size is perfect for 4 to 6 people or for 1 to 2 people with the intention of freezing leftover portions. Be aware that for the slow cooker to function properly it must be 1/2 to 2/3rds full.

All-Clad Stainless Steel Electric Slow Cooker 99003 Review

All-Clad Stainless Steel Electric Slow Cooker 99003

I have owned this slow cooker for two years. It was less than six months old when it began to show signs of wear. The black plastic around the keypad cracked and has slowly chipped off in small pieces ever since them. Currently, more than half of it is missing. I have also had to reattach the feet on 3 different occasions. On the other hand, I have not had any problems that affect its function; the machine works well.
I would not recommend this item--although it works adequately, I expect better quality in this price range and from All Clad in general.

Dr. Weil 9811 The Healthy Kitchen 5-Quart Slow Cooker Review

Dr. Weil 9811 The Healthy Kitchen 5-Quart Slow Cooker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have used this several times now, and it is a great crockpot. It seems to have good temperature control, things are cooked perfectly, and the post cooking keep-warm feature is worth its weight in gold to me. I can start it in the morning before I leave for work, and set it to cook per the instructions, and it will finish and switch to warm. I used to have to just use recipes that could tolerate the 10 hours of cooking that they would have to endure. This is also a nice shape, for cooking a variety of items.
Update Dec 2010 - I feel like I should add an update to this review, given the quality problems some people have experienced - I have used this regularly for almost a year now, and it is holding up spectacularly. I store it in the back of a kitchen cabinet, so I have to drag it out to use it, so it is not being coddled. Most Sundays I roast a chicken in the oven, and then as I pull the meat off, I throw everything else in this crockpot (including pan drippings), cover it in water, add 1 TBSP of apple cider vinegar (for extracting minerals from the bones), and set it to cook on low for 10 hours, then switch to warm. Then I forget it until morning, when I wake up and unplug it, and let it cool a little. Then I strain it, and have 2 quarts of nice stock to use through the week. I love this thing, but it does sound like you either get a good one or a bad one, I would hope the company would send a replacement if it falls apart as quickly as some are experiencing.
